Description:

Update 10:00 a.m. – The fire has been updated at 72 acres on the Watch Duty website. They are also reporting it at 80% containment, as sourced through CAL FIRE’s X account.

They are also providing updates at CAL FIRE’s incident reporting website. The fire is being handled by the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management. Both agencies’ staffing levels have been mitigated due to the government shutdown.

A fire broke out south of Black Rock Campground in Joshua Tree National Park on Sunday morning. At around 10:00 a.m. Yucca Valley resident Paige Swift was just starting her daily trail-run near the West Side Loop trail when she says she saw smoke coming from south of the trail. Swift says she called 911 shortly after 10:00 a.m. and dispatch told her she was the second person to report the smoke.

Swift says she moved up toward the Hi-View trailhead where she got a better look at the fire, which at that point was growing rapidly due to wind. Firefighters from the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management responded, with San Bernardino County Firefighters provided a truck and unit in response as well.

The fire was first reported at around four acres, and according to Swift the smoke and fire looked like it was coming from a wash area in the trail system and the smoke wasn’t coming from inside Black Rock Campground.

The campground was reportedly full and was evacuated by a group of Joshua Tree National Park rangers who are not currently furloughed. They also made sure the surrounding West Side Loop, Hi-View and Panoramic trails were also clear. San Marino Drive and Black Rock Canyon Drive were both closed. By 11:00 a.m. smoke was visible from Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. CalFire’s aerial units responded with helicopters and air tankers, with the helicopter units seen filling up near Hawk’s Landing in Yucca Valley.

The fire was characterized as a “brush fire” by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who informed residents of the street closures up near the campground.

Shortly after 12:00 noon on Sunday, the fire’s size was updated at 66 acres, with 25% containment and a stop of forward movement. Smoke visibly began to dissipate in the afternoon, and by the early evening the only evidence of the fire in surrounding neighborhoods was the unsettling smell of smoke. Winds stayed mercifully light on Sunday, and Yucca Valley had received some precipitation in the last few weeks.

We’ve reached out to the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management for an update on the fire – no cause for the fire has been released. Currently both federal agencies are affected by the Government shutdown which is entering its third week.
