Description:

The Animal Action League will be holding their next nail-trim clinic this Thursday (9/25). Reporter Annelies Kuiper decided to let the non-profit help out with her pooch, and shares her experience.

My poor dog Cooper had very long nails on all his feet and adamantly refused to let me trim them. He was beginning to adjust his way of walking, especially on my concrete floors.

I looked up Animal Action League, because they have spayed, neutered and vaccinated all my pets over the 32 years I’ve lived on Copper Mountain Mesa. Sure enough, there was a “nail trimming clinic” coming up, and there is a clinic every month, no appointment necessary, just show up with your pet.

The date loomed, and my brain conjured up all the horrific and terrifying things that could go wrong! First off getting him into the car and down our atrocious dirt roads to the clinic. He’s extremely protective and an excellent guard dog, just not well socialized, as we live five miles off the pavement and hardly anyone ever comes over here. As soon as I put the leash on him, however, he became a different dog, as usual.

He jumped into the backseat without any fuss and I carefully buckled him in. We arrived early but already there were 9 cars ahead of us. About 30 minutes later, it was our turn and I was handed a muzzle to put on Cooper, which he allowed me to do without fuss. He jumped willingly out of the car and we three humans immediately sprang into action. One volunteer grabbed him around the back legs, I held him up front with a towel over his head and the third volunteer clipped all his nails with lightning speed. Before Cooper knew it, his terrifying ordeal was over and we were back in the car driving home, as he chewed contentedly on a treat for being such a good boy!

The next nail trimming clinic is Thursday September 25th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Animal Action League is located at 62762 Twentynine Palms Highway, in Joshua Tree.

Their website is www.animalactionleague.net.
