Over 1000 laptops distributed to Morongo Unified School District students

Last Friday (September 5), MUSD’s Information Technology Department hosted a massive laptop giveaway. Distributing over one thousand devices to local secondary students to support their education outside of the classroom.

On Friday, families gathered at seven distribution sites spread across the district, where students lined up to receive their laptops, with staff members on hand to answer questions and provide basic instructions. By the end of the day, a total of 1,117 laptops had been successfully distributed. Each student who received a device was able to take it home permanently — the laptops are theirs to keep for future academic and personal use. 

MUSD’s IT director Troy Slayden said, “A majority of our students can’t afford personal devices, and knowing that, we wanted to make sure they had every opportunity. With a laptop, you can apply for jobs, access online medical care if you don’t have transportation or even run your own business. Hopefully our students will use these devices in ways that are productive and meaningful for them.” 

The laptops had previously been part of the district’s technology fleet and were recently replaced by newer models in classrooms. While the older devices were no longer considered optimal for daily instructional use, they remain fully functional and capable of supporting online research, digital assignments and communication platforms. 

Over the summer, MUSD technicians — many of whom grew up in the Morongo Basin — inspected, cleaned and repaired each device. They then restored the laptops to factory settings, installed Microsoft Office and prepared them for distribution. 

For families who were unable to attend Friday’s event, makeup distribution days will be scheduled in the coming weeks. Schools will share details directly with students and parents to ensure eligible students have the chance to receive a laptop.
