The Twentynine Palms City Council held their bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday (9/9).
Two ordinances were up for adoption and both affected the Ofland Resort Project. Both ordinances were on the consent calendar which is considered routine by Town Council and is voted on by one motion. The development code amendment and the rezoning ordinance were therefore approved by Council in that one motion.
Breanne Dusastre, marketing director of the Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID), gave a presentation on the previous year’s developments for TBID. She says it was a challenging year with international and national tourism significantly down.
Here Ms. Dusastre explains:
“We’re here to talk about some of the highlights from this last year. And as we look back it’s definitely been a year of tremendous momentum and growth here in our community and also one of pretty significant challenges in the travel and tourist industry. When you look whether it’s across the country or globally the tourist industry has faced a whole series of headwinds. 2024 was an election year, we’re dealing with tariffs and trade tensions and travel advisories, inflation, rising costs and we’ve seen the airline industry respond with significant shifts in flight routes and patterns as they adapt to the changing demand. International visitation to California is set to drop by 9% this year and domestic tourism is forecast to be flat.”
The Town Council approved the annual report, as well as the TBID marketing plan and budget for fiscal year 2025-2026, and adopted the resolution to continue to levy an assessment on all existing and future hotel businesses within the city at a rate of 1.5% per occupied room night rate.
