The California Fish and Game Commission (CFGC) is meeting over two days starting on Wednesday, August 13. Amongst the many topics relevant to southern Californians, the commission will once again consider approving the Western Joshua Tree Conservation plan.
At their last meeting in June the 305 page plan was up for consideration for approval and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Director Chuck Bonham urged the board to do it, saying that the plan was “ready” to go that day. He also pressed the fact that the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan is an iterative document that can continue to be updated after the commission’s approval.
After a presentation by CDFW’s Senior Environmental Specialist Drew Kaiser on changes to the plan, many of the public comments urged the commission to delay the approval until the financial impact to single-family property owners could be fully assessed.
The Commission agreed to delay the consideration until August’s meeting. Since then the plan has had some updates, including the removal of Western Joshua Tree relocation requirements for properties under 10-acres. Those updates are expected to be presented to the commission, which will then hear public comment before deciding on whether to accept the Plan which has been bouncing back and forth between the departments since February of this year.
You’ll be able to stream the California Fish and Game Commission meeting online but to submit public comments you’ll either need to attend in person in San Bernardino, or join the meeting remotely using Zoom.
The Western Joshua Tree Plan action item is #8 on the agenda and the rest of the consent agenda items and public comment are scheduled for Thursday, August 14th.
