Description:

Hundreds of animals were killed in a barn fire in Landers.

On Friday (August 1) at around 5:30 p.m., San Bernardino County Fire crews responded to a report of smoke coming from a residence in the 59900 block of Lorraine Ave in Landers. Crews say they arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-story home, and flames were threatening a nearby barn. The homeowner told crews that the barn’s two structures contained 3,000 animals, including snakes, lizards, rabbits, and bearded dragons. Additional animals such as geese, goats, and turkeys were also located on the property.

Despite firefighting efforts, County Fire says that the wind carried the flames to the barn. A total of nine engines, one battalion chief, one robotics unit, and one fire investigator responded to the scene. Despite aggressive firefighting efforts, both the home and barn were deemed a total loss. Once the fire was brought under control, County Fire says they focused their efforts on rescuing as many animals as possible.

County fire says that there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters, but the exact number of animal fatalities is not yet known.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
