Description: When things don’t seem to be going the way we want, the natural reaction is to feel down about it. If things get really bad, the natural inclination is to mope and be depressed. Subconsciously, we might be thinking if Hashem sees me in this constant depressed state, He’ll change things around for me. But in truth, the opposite approach would accomplish much more. The Gemara says in Masechet Shabbat, the Shechina only dwells with a person when he is in a state of happiness. That happiness is supposed to stem from our appreciation of being able to fulfill Torah and mitzvot . How lucky we are to have the opportunity to be in this world and serve Hashem and acquire eternity. When a person is in a depressed state, he’s not able to accomplish what he’s capable of accomplishing. We should never mope around feeling sorry for ourselves. Rather, we should thank Hashem for doing what’s best for us and move on happily. Sometimes, a few words of chizuk can change a person’s entire attitude. And then, when a person is happy, the blessing comes back. A woman told, a few years ago she was very overweight and worked hard to lose 70 pounds and was able to maintain it. But then, when Corona hit, she was in a different state of mind and went back to her old habits. She’s also a shadchanit and hadn’t made even one shidduch during the months of Corona. Moreover, she had two children she was trying to marry off and things were not looking promising. She felt bad about her situation and was not functioning the way she was capable of. A couple of weeks after Shavuot, she heard a class from a Rebbetzin. The Rebbetzin quoted a pasuk in Tehilim , “מוציא אסירים בכושרות'' and gave inspiring chizuk about how Hashem is taking us out of the jail we had all been in. The words were so uplifting. The woman felt herself rising out of the state of mind she had been in. The next day, her children got her a book on emunah as part of a wedding anniversary gift. She opened it up randomly to a chapter and was pleasantly surprised to see that exact same pasuk she heard yesterday being quoted, “ מוציא אסירים בכושרות” . In the book, the pasuk was used to describe the way Hashem brings about shidduchim – exactly what she needed to read. She decided she was going to read that perek of Tehilim every day with meaning, and it gave her so much strength. In a short time, she was back on track, eating the right way, and she was able to once again lose all the extra weight. Then, with the help of Hashem, she made five shidduchim in a very short time span. It was the most shidduchim she had ever made in that amount of time. Then, baruch Hashem, her son got engaged. The chizuk she got from that Rebbetzin’s class changed everything. She became happier, she was uplifted, she got so much help from Hashem and was able to produce the way she is capable of. Being down when things aren’t going the way we want is understandable, but it is not optimal. We should work hard to get ourselves out of that state, back into happy mode. We’ll only benefit as a result.
