Sometimes we see people accomplishing what seems to be far more than is humanly possible. They are able to juggle dozens of responsibilities and excel in each one of them. They are starting organizations, serving in communal institutions; they seem to be in three places at the same time, always helping people in so many ways. And we marvel at their accomplishments. But we wonder, how is it possible for them to do everything they are doing with the same 24 hour days that we have? The answer is very simple – it’s called Siyata D’shamaya- help from Hashem. Rabbi Meir Shapiro, who introduced the revolutionary idea of the Daf Yomi, accomplished in his short 46 years of life more than what’s normal to accomplish in two lifetimes. He founded and led the great Yeshivat Chachmeh Lublin, he was an outstanding leader and gifted speaker, he became the Chief Rabbi of Lodz, he authored Sefarim in which he plummeted to the depths of Torah, he was the Head of the Education Department of Agudat Yisrael in East Galicia and eventually became the President of Agudat Yisrael in Poland, he was a member of the Moetzet Gedoleh HaTorah, he was part of the Vaad HaChinuch, he chaired a committee that held the responsibility of delegating rabbinical positions throughout Poland and he even served in the Polish Parliament. How could one person, in such a short time, be involved in so many different endeavors and make such an impact on the world? Rabbi Shapiro himself taught us the answer. He quoted a Pasuk when Hashem told Avraham” “ הבט נא השמימה וספור הכוכבים אם תוכל לספור אותם - Hashem told Avraham to go outside and count all the stars, if it’s possible to do such a thing.” And then Hashem said: “ כה יהיה זרעיך -so too will your children be.” Rabbi Shapiro explained, of course Avraham followed the command of Hashem here and went outside and started counting the stars. But Hashem told him in the same sentence that it’s impossible. So why would He tell him to count? Hashem was teaching Avraham a most valuable lesson. Even though, b’Derech Hateva, it would be impossible for him to count all the stars, Hashem still said I want you to begin. You do your share and I’ll help you with the rest. It doesn’t matter if it’s possible or not, because you have Me on your side. And then Hashem said כה יהיה זרעיך -The same will apply to your children. I want them to know this lesson too. Whenever something needs to be done, and it’s the right thing to do, we don’t have to worry so much about it being possible or not. We have to do what we can and then Hashem will come in and help us with the rest. Hashem wants us to start, to do our best. All results are in His hands anyway. We could all accomplish a tremendous amount with our small efforts. Hashem is here to give us the help that we need, but we have to make the first move. We have to accept responsibilities; we have to jump into the projects that we think will benefit the community and then worry about the details later. It we live by this motto, we’ll look back years from now and say, “Wow, I can’t believe I accomplished all that.” Because it’s not really us, it’s Hashem. If we start, He comes and carries us the rest of the way. |
