The Atlantic reports that many of them did so out of fear of retribution from Patel, who they claim has gone after dissenters aggressively. The Atlantic piece begins with a report that Patel allegedly had a "freakout," believing he was fired because he had trouble logging into an internal computer system. They report that Patel fired off a series of anxious phone calls, telling associates that he had been booted out. The issue turned out to be a technical error that was soon fixed, but it allegedly caused a flurry of calls to the White House from Congress and members of the bureau wanting to know who was in charge at the FBI. The piece goes on to allege that Patel engages in "bouts of excessive drinking," and sources report witnessing "conspicuous inebriation and unexplained absences." Sources claim that early in Patel's time as FBI Director, morning meetings frequently had to be moved to the afternoon as a result of his drinking. Patel denies these claims.
