We’ve got a science fiction double feature today, folks! Both of these 1950 films were groundbreaking in their own right, but they have profound Cold War implications. These films are similar in a sense, but perhaps differ in style and tone. Destination Moon focuses on the need to develop space travel and the necessity of the military industrial/scientific complex to “do their part” to give America an edge in the space race. Rocketship X-M warns us that in 1950 our society was at a critical junction where it could potentially use our technology for good or destroy civilization as we know it.
In the podcast I point out a few other Cold War observations. Both of these films are really cool, but personally I prefer Destination Moon if you can only get around to one.
