I think everyone knows George Orwell’s 1984 as a political novel that deals with topics like surveillance, propaganda and general totalitarianism but I think it gets under appreciated as a historical novel that provides some deep critical analysis of British/Western society in the early years of the Cold War. Orwell nailed a lot of predictions in his book to the point where “1984 was supposed to be fiction, not an instruction manual” has become a trope in the realm of political discussion.
Today we’ve got a free-wheeling show where I cover a few of the themes in the book that relate to the Cold War. In half an hour I feel like we covered a decent amount of ground, but there’s still plenty left on the table to discuss and we will do another show in the immediate future about 1984. I sat down behind the mic to do this without notes or any kind of real structure, hopefully I make sense! Either way, it was a fun subject to cover and I’m looking forward to hearing your feedback on the show and your thoughts about 1984 and Orwell. Send it to Ryan@coldwarcast.com
This show is also special because not only do my dogs make their appearance, several chickens were hanging out right outside my door a few feet away pecking and squawking wanting to get in. If I leave the door open, theres a couple of them that make a beeline for the dog’s food dish. Fun times at my “Animal Farm”, ha ha.
