Films are one important way that major nations cultivate soft power, and China is hoping to use its film industry to enhance its international image. Ticket sales in China grossed more than 6.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 and are expected to top 11.9 billion by the end of 2017, which would propel China to overtake the U.S. as the highest grossing country in box office sales. But while many Chinese films have proven to be “blockbusters” domestically, these films usually fail to appeal to foreign audiences. In this episode, we talk to Professor Stan Rosen about how China attempts to use film and media to promote a positive narrative of Chinese power. |
