Following Pyongyang’s February 11th missile test, Beijing announced that it would suspend imports of North Korean coal for the rest of 2017. Although China has voted in favor of tightening UN sanctions on North Korea, Beijing continues to stress that sanctions are not an end in themselves and urges resumption of diplomacy with North Korea. Growing friction between China and North Korea is evident, though trade ties have continued to expand. While Beijing’s recent decision to suspend coal imports came as a surprise to many, whether this marks a notable shift in China’s policy in dealing with Pyongyang is a topic of debate among observers.
