Born Pietro Vito Ottoboni in 1610 to a noble Venetian family and the youngest of nine children of Vittoria Tornielli and Marco Ottoboni, grand chancellor of the Republic of Venice.

Ottoboni received an education at the University of Padua and earned a doctorate in canon and civil law in 1627.

Pope Innocent X appointed him to the cardinalate and in 1652 made Cardinal-Priest of San Salvatore in Lauro.

Pope Innocent XI died and a conclave ensued and they elected Ottoboni on October 6, 1689 and he chose the name Alexander VIII.

While he celebrated a canonization Mass on October 16, 1690, he looked sluggish and fell ill. Doctors suggested that the pope rest. Eventually, Alexander VIII died on February 1, 1691.
