Winter Storm Update

A major winter storm continues to drop snow on the Sierra. Officials say travel to the area continues to be hazardous and is not recommended. Andrew Schwartz, Director of UC Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab near Donner Summit joined us to talk about the storm we’ve been experiencing and when conditions might begin to let up.

Backcountry Skier's Insight into Deadly Avalanche

The Sierra Avalanche Center continues to issue an avalanche warning for the Central Sierra including the Castle Peak area where a group of backcountry skiers got caught in an avalanche the size of a football field.

Six survivors have been rescued but the remaining nine victims are believed to be dead. Brian Hickey has been reporting on the deadly avalanche for KCRA and is an experienced backcountry skier himself. He joined us to share his insights into this tragic story.

Diversity and Representation at the Winter Olympics

At the start of the Winter Olympics, Laila Edwards made history the moment she stepped on the ice, becoming the first Black woman to play ice hockey for Team USA. While Edward’s milestone performance at this year’s games marks progress there are still longstanding barriers to winter sports. From the relatively high cost of gear like skates and skis, to limited access to things like ice time, there are many factors that contribute to a lack of representation at the Winter games.
Dr. Akilah Carter-Francique researches issues of race, gender, social class, and their intersections with sport, education, and society. She joined us to talk about why representation and inclusion are so important at the Winter Olympics and in all sports.

February, the shortest month of the year, is just about finished but there is still plenty of time left to get out there and experience some local art! Arts advocate Veronica Delgado Rodriguez joins us for our monthly “Arts Talk,” to showcase some events for you to check out before March rolls around.
