Twin Rivers Revokes Charter for Highlands Adult School
A chapter in the saga of Highlands Community Charter and Technical Schools appears to be closing. Last week, Twin Rivers School Board voted 6 to 1 to revoke the charter of Highlands’ online and in-person schools. Leadership at the school has vowed to appeal the decision and continues to hold classes as its future remains unclear. The vote follows a state audit last year that found, among other issues, that the school received 180 million dollars in K-12 funds it was not eligible for. Andie Judson, was the reporter behind the years-long investigation called The Wild West of Education, that led to the state audit and to seismic changes at Highlands’. She joined us to recap her investigation and highlight what has changed at Highlands since her initial reporting.
Long ER Visit Times in the San Joaquin Valley
A trip to the emergency room is no fun in general, but it’s often made worse by long wait times. A new report focused on the eight-county San Joaquin Valley region found an ER visit could be more than double the national standard. Tim Sheehan is a senior reporter with The Intersection, a health equity reporting lab, part of the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative, and he joins us today to explain how longer wait times have cascading effects across the Central Valley.
Teagarden Jazz Festival
Each year, scores of young musicians descend upon Sacramento State for a day-long celebration of jazz. The Teagarden Jazz Festival is an annual event where youth musicians from all over take part in clinics, workshops and the opportunity to be awarded scholarships from the Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation for the annual summer jazz camp. Steve Roach is the Director of Jazz Studies at Sac State and oversees the day-long festival taking place in Capistrano Hall this Saturday, Feb. 7. |
