CA State Budget Breakdown
Governor Gavin Newsom released his first proposal for the 2026-27 state budget on Friday, showing an estimated $2.9 billion shortfall headed into the next fiscal year — considerably less than the $18 billion deficit forecast by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office. State officials say this budget does not make major cuts but also doesn’t add significant investments either, as California projects a $22 billion shortfall and shortfalls in the upcoming years. CapRadio Statehouse Politics Reporter Laura Fitzgerald breaks down the numbers from the Department of Finance, and what changes could be on the table leading up to the May Revise.
Free-Market Perspective on CA Budget
Wayne Winegarden, Senior Fellow for the Pacific Research Institute, a free-market think tank, responds to Newsom's budget proposal and what it could mean for the state's workforce, economy and social safety net.
Local Budget Impacts
The state budget's impact ultimately trickles down to the local level, with cities and counties being responsible for carrying out projects. Newsom touted a 9% decrease in the state's unsheltered homelessness, but the number has been questioned by some critics. CapRadio Local Government Reporter Riley Palmer talks about how the city and county of Sacramento are responding to last week's proposal, particularly the impact on housing and homelessness.
