New Year Politics Roundup

The state Capitol is back in full swing, with a new legislative leader set to be sworn in this afternoon. Today on Insight we’ll check in on some of the major political happenings this week, including the surprise military action in Venezuela over the weekend and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s final State of the State scheduled Thursday. POLITICO California Playbook co-author Dustin Gardiner and CapRadio Politics Reporter Gerardo Zavala join us with more.

New State Laws

More than 900 new laws were passed in California last year. That is quite a lot but luckily a trusty trio of politics reporters joined us to talk about some of the biggest ones that will be affecting our lives this new year. Including anti-masking laws for police, the ban on plastic bags, and union rights for ride share drivers. CalMatters' Jeanne Kuang, and CapRadio’s Gerardo Zavala and Laura Fitzgerald break down those laws and more in our new law round up.

Central Sierra Snow Lab

A series of winter storms at the end of the year have brought much-needed snow across California. The snowfall comes shortly after the state conducted its first snow survey of the year, which determined that California’s levels were still below average. Dr. Andrew Schwartz is the Director of the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab at Donner Summit, and provides an update on the state’s snowpack and the implications for California’s water supply later in the year.
