Sacramento Mayor’s ‘Six-Point Plan’ on Homelessness
The city of Sacramento is charting a new path to address the ongoing crisis of homelessness. Last month, the city council voted to approve a “six-point plan” which includes new tiny home villages, safe camping and parking sites, as well as permanent supportive housing. This also comes as the city welcomes Maraskeshia Smith as its new permanent city manager, and Sacramento continues to face budgetary challenges. CapRadio Local Government Reporter Riley Palmer spoke with Mayor Kevin McCarty about how these new developments are shaping up.
Veteran Art Institute
The daughter of an Air Force veteran got a front row seat in understanding how serving one’s country can instill pride, while also carrying lifelong trauma due to unspoken PTSD. She transformed that experience into a space for creativity and healing. Kathleen Ellertson is the Founder and President of the Veteran Art Institute. She joins us along with John Nesbit, an Army veteran and art therapist, to discuss the work of the nonprofit and the therapeutic benefits of art. The Art of Veterans exhibit is currently on display at the Mill Station Art & Culture Center (MACC) in Rancho Cordova through October 18, showcasing a collection of artwork created by U.S. military veterans from across the nation.
Girls Night Out Placerville
Pink in the Night is a month-long cancer awareness campaign in El Dorado County that takes place every October. With support from Images of Hope, businesses along Main Street in Placerville illuminate their storefronts with strands of pink lights to symbolize the community’s united fight against cancer. This Saturday, people have an opportunity to enjoy the lights, along with live music, shopping and a fashion show all for a good cause. We’ll learn more about Girls Night Out from Wendy Goosen, the founder of Images of Hope, and Mikhail Chernyavsky, who volunteers with the event.
