Description:

Maternity Care Deserts in the Central Valley

When cuts are made to hospital budgets, maternity care is often the first to go, particularly in rural areas. Tim Sheehan is a health reporting fellow with The Intersection, a health equity reporting lab in the Central Valley who has been covering the closure, and subsequent reopening, of Madera Community Hospital in the San Joaquin Valley. He joins Insight to talk about how cuts at facilities like Madera Community threaten labor and delivery services in the region, and pose the risk of creating maternity care “deserts.”

Camp Fire Learning Loss

The Camp Fire is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history. Nearly seven years later, schools and students are still recovering from learning loss. Carolyn Jones is a K-12 reporter with CalMatters and explains the toll that natural disasters have on the classroom, and the lessons to give traumatized children a better chance of thriving long term. This story is a part of a collaboration called Disrupted by Disaster with The Associated Press, Honolulu Civil Beat, Blue Ridge Public Radio, and Centro de Periodismo Investigativo in Puerto Rico to look at how school communities are recovering from natural disasters.

CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state.
