CARE Court’s Difficult Rollout

In March 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom created Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Courts, to compel Californians sleeping on the streets while suffering from severe mental illness into treatment. In that time, voters approved billions of dollars in new funding as CARE Court scaled up across the state’s 58 counties. But a new analysis from our partners at CalMatters found that far fewer Californians are enrolled in the mental health program than he projected. CalMatters Homelessness Reporter Marisa Kendall joins us with her reporting

CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state.

Sac BlkLit Book Fest

Sacramento’s historic Oak Park neighborhood will be the backdrop for a one-day celebration of black literature in the city. The Sac BlkLit Book Fair will take place this Saturday, Sept. 13 at Underground Books and The Guild Theatre. Cassandra Jennings is the President and CEO of St. HOPE, which is putting on the festival. She joins us along with Author and Publisher Sheryl Lister, to talk about the importance of literacy and the work of uplifting authors in the community.

California Biodiversity Week

California is home to a rich variety of plants, animals and other organisms. Tens of thousands of species live across the Golden State’s numerous ecosystems. But many are facing habitat loss and the ongoing threat of worsening climate change, and run the risk of becoming endangered or going extinct. Five years ago, the state implemented the 30x30 initiative, to conserve 30 percent of its lands and coastal waters by 2030. As California marks Biodiversity Week, Secretary Wade Crowfoot from the California Natural Resources Agency and Dr. Jun Bando, Executive Director of the California Native Plant Society, provide an update on how these conservation efforts are going, and the work that still needs to be done.
