Wildfire Effects on Calaveras County

Last week an intense storm system swept across the Sierra Nevada. Over 9,000 lightning strikes ignited a series of wildfires, including the TCU September Lighting Complex Fire in Calaveras, Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties, which has burned almost 14,000 acres. The wildfires prompted evacuations, destroyed part of the historic town of Chinese Camp, and threatened the foothills community of Murphys. Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brent Pascua provides an update on efforts to contain the complex fire. Also, Martin Huberty, Calaveras County Supervisor and Executive Director of the Visitors Bureau discusses the impact on the local community and tourism, and Daniel Kushnir from Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys talks about the experience of seeing the wildfires burn up to their property line.

Historic Folsom Powerhouse Marks 130 Years

A historic building along the shore of the American River is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. The Folsom Powerhouse became one of the first facilities in the country to generate and transmit high-voltage AC electricity, keeping the lights on in the Sacramento region until 1952. Zakary Adams from California State Parks and docent Daryl Walker talk about the powerhouse’s significance ahead of its anniversary celebration on Sept. 13, coinciding with the Grand Electric Carnival, and their Oct. 18 Electricity Fair.
