Opposition to CA’s Redistricting Special Election

It’s official. On Nov. 4th, voters will decide whether to redraw California’s congressional maps, with the hopes of giving Democrats an edge in the 2026 midterms. Democrats at the state legislature approved the special election which, Gov. Gavin Newsom says, is retaliation against Texas lawmakers redrawing their congressional maps at the request of President Donald Trump. At stake is which party could control the U.S. House. But a mid-decade redistricting that bypasses California’s independent commission has been met with heated opposition - that goes beyond predictable party lines. Cynthia Dai is a former rotating chair of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. David Daley is a senior fellow at FairVote and author of Antidemocratic: Inside the Right's 50-year Plot to Control American Elections. They discuss their opposition to Gov. Newsom’s partisan push to redraw congressional maps.

Eradicating Invasive Golden Mussels

Golden mussels pose a growing threat to California’s water systems and aquatic ecosystems. The species was first discovered in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta last year and have now been found in more than 50 locations across the state. Officials have implemented quarantine and inspection procedures to try and curb their spread as the golden mussels can cause significant damage to water infrastructure and devastate local ecosystems. A Davis-based company has been working to find a solution to the infestation, having created a product that successfully targets zebra and quagga mussels. Dr. Pam Marrone, co-founder of the Invasive Species Corporation talks about the science behind Zequanox, and her company’s work to get rid of the golden mussel for good.
