Laws at the time limited professors to only obtaining the bodies of criminals sentenced to death, leading educators to take desperate measures in order to obtain specimens for their classes. These included paying ‘body-snatchers’ to dig up the recently deceased or, in the unfortunate case of Dr. Robert Knox, unknowingly accepting the bodies of murdered citizens.
