In 1995 at Newport Country Club, 43-year-old George “Buddy” Marucci found himself in the final match of the U.S. Amateur Championship against none other than 19-year-old Tiger Woods. In an epic match that is still replayed on TV, Marucci gave Woods a run for his money, trading blows in a 36-hole slugfest that wasn’t decided until the final hole. Though Woods ended the victor, the gritty performance by Marucci thrust him into the spotlight. After the ’95 Amateur he went on to become a Walker Cup staple, captaining two winning teams in ’07 and ’09 and he eventually went on to win the 2008 U.S. Senior Amateur at Shady Oaks Country Club. |
