Like many new mothers, protagonist Rebecca Stone is deeply in love with her child and deeply overwhelmed. Enter Priscilla, a nurse at the hospital who eventually becomes Rebecca's nanny and friend. Just as the novel begins to explore the relationship between the black woman and her white employer, the story takes a turn. Priscilla dies in childbirth and Rebecca steps in to adopt her child. On the podcast, Alam shares how parenthood affected him, his approach to writing complex female characters and his next project.
