In this episode, Daniel Runde talks about his recent trip to Afghanistan and the need for a gradual and thoughtful withdrawal of U.S. assistance to Afghanistan. Hosted by Erol Yayboke, Deputy Director of the Project on Prosperity and Development at CSIS, Dan talks about the important gains that have been made in Afghanistan since 2001. While Afghanistan is still a poor country, education, tax collection, media freedoms, and standards of living have vastly improved. Dan shares his stories of meeting with senior political and religious leaders in Afghanistan, and why they think it is important that the United States withdraw – but in an orderly manner that does not put many of the gains made at risk and that goes hand in hand with the evolving peace process. |
