Description: FARGO — The Minnesota Mr. Football Award turned 20 years old last fall. Over the span of those two decades, North Dakota State has seen three award winners come to Fargo. That’s the second most for any school, trailing only Minnesota.

NDSU can add another Mr. Football winner, ironically enough, by way of Minnesota.

Elk River wide receiver Cade Osterman announced he will transfer to NDSU for this upcoming season. Osterman spent last year at the University of Minnesota as a redshirt. He announced in April that he was entering the transfer portal. The Bison offered him shortly after he entered the portal.

Osterman was a three-year standout at Elk River High School. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver starred at three different spots for the Elks, including quarterback, running back and safety.

Osterman ran for 1,453 yards and 135 carries scoring 20 touchdowns for an undefeated Elk River team that won the Minnesota Class 5A championship. Osterman added 55 tackles on defense, which led him to winning Mr. Football.

Osterman was also selected as a first-team, all-state player, who was a two-star recruit in high school and was considered the 37th best player in the state of Minnesota in his recruiting class.

He was offered a scholarship by St. Thomas and had preferred walk-on offers from Montana State and Ohio University. Iowa State then offered Osterman a preferred walk-on opportunity, which he originally accepted, but then switched when the Gophers became interested.

Osterman’s dad Aaron, played three years at Minnesota and still ranks in the top 15 in school history in receptions and yards.

Since Osterman entered the portal, St. Thomas offered again along with Marist University, which is in New York.

Osterman is the third transfer portal addition for NDSU in the last week. The Bison added Howard punter Aaron Bickerton and Cornell cornerback Anthony Chideme-Alfaro. That’s in addition to Marshall offensive lineman Trent Fraley, who joined NDSU in January.

In a unique twist, NDSU now has two 2022 Minnesota state champion quarterbacks on its roster. In addition to Osterman, Maple Grove’s Jacob Kilzer transferred from the Air Force Academy to NDSU in January.

NDSU lost standout wide receiver Eli Green to Iowa State in late April after spring football wrapped up.

NDSU’s previous Mr. Football winners were Nick Mertens (2004), Zach Vraa (2009) and Robbie Grimsley (2014).

Osterman has four years of eligibility remaining.
