FARGO — The 2024 season opener for North Dakota State is one of the most anticipated games in recent memory for Bison football.

ESPN's top college football writer believes it's silly for Colorado to be playing NDSU. Thamel was on the College Gameday Podcast with host Rece Davis earlier this week, chatting about Colorado's football prospects and brought up the Buffaloes' schedule, which begins with NDSU.
"First of all, they opened with North Dakota State and the Associate Athletic Director who scheduled that game should, whoever scheduled that game should be fired." Thamel said.
The game between the Bison and Buffaloes was finalized in June 2016. NDSU will be paid $700,000 for the game, its richest for an FBS game. It will be the only game against a FBS opponent until the 2028 season with a game at Oregon.
"That is just a negligent, horrible athletic department decision. You do not schedule an FCS game you can lose. You just don't do it. Now North Dakota State might not have been what they were three or four years ago, but they're still excellent." Thamel added.
NDSU lost its most recent game against an FBS opponent, a 31-28 defeat at Arizona in 2022. The Bison have a 9-4 overall record against the top division, including a six-game win streak against the likes of Minnesota, Kansas State, Iowa State and Iowa.
"They are going to be sound and they are going to have the great still sort of mid major competitive advantage if we were talking about college basketball, and that's continuity. Sure they lost some guys in the transfer portal, but North Dakota State is a program, it is a solid program." Thamel went on to say.
Colorado and Sanders were the toast of college football to begin the 2023 season with College Gameday and FOX's pregame show each making appearances in Boulder. They started with a 3-0 record with wins over TCU and Nebraska, before finishing with a 1-8 record over the final two months of the season.
The Buffaloes have remained in the spotlight this offseason, with 37 players added through the transfer portal, and 44 players transferring out. Sanders has been vocal about the players that have left, sometimes saying disparaging things about the players that have left.
Colorado has a road matchup at Nebraska the week after the game with the Bison, sparking Sanders to ask Colorado to move the game up a couple of days to get more preparation for the Huskers.
Polasek has added his excitement for the matchup to start his head coaching career with Deion Sanders on the opposing sideline.
"I think the kick times would be great for us and I'm eager to meet a legend, he's one of the top-20 athletes of all time.
We're going to have dig for film. They have a new coordinators offensively and defensively. It's going to come down to who's better at the basics and special teams could tilt this matchup."
"This is a game that whoever scheduled that eight years ago or whatever whoever they are, should be shaking in their boots because that is just that's going to be very interesting."
