FARGO — The North Dakota State baseball team surged to a big lead early and held off St. Thomas 7-4 in a Summit League game on Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison scored all their runs in the first two innings, then kept St. Thomas off the board the final three innings after the Tommies closed within three runs in the middle innings.
After Bison starter Logan Knight stranded a runner in the top of the first inning NDSU got things rolling in its first four at-bats. Jake Schaffner beat out an infield single leading off and Cadyn Schwabe reached on another infield single. James Dunlap followed with a run-scoring double and Garret Hill smacked a two-run double to left-center field for a 3-0 lead.
Knight set the Tommies down in order in the top of the second inning and the Bison got busy scratching out four more runs in the home half, doing most of the damage with two outs.
Will Busch led off with a single to right and moved up to second base on Schaffner's sacrifice bunt. Schwabe drew a walk and after a flyout, Hill's infield single loaded the bases. Two runs scored on Colten Becker's single to right and a third crossed on a St. Thomas error. Kyle Law made it 7-0 with an RBI infield single.
The Tommies began chipping away when Ben Vujovich singled in two runs in the fourth. In the fifth, the Tommies' Joe Roder singled in a run and in the sixth, Joe Vos hit a leadoff double, moved to third on Vujovich's groundout and scored on Tanner Recchio's groundout to make it 7-4.
But that would be pretty much it for offense. NDSU put just four runners on after the second inning and only one advanced as far as third base.
The Tommies didn't fare much better the last three innings. Bison reliever Skyler Riedinger retired the Tommies in order in the seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth, Bison reliever Joey Danielson gave up a leadoff double and a one-out walk. But NDSU got a force out at second and Danielson recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Hill was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs and Becker had a hit and two RBIs. Dunlap, Sam Canton and Law all had hits and RBIs and Busch and Schwabe both were 2 for 4.
Knight got the win to improve to 4-3. He allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four. Reese Ligtenberg pitched the sixth and Riedinger retired all six hitters he faced, striking out two. Danielson picked up his ninth save of the season.
The Bison improved to 10-9-1 in the Summit League and 15-25-1 overall. The Tommies fell to 12-7 in the league and 18-20 overall.
The teams close out their three-game weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Newman Outdoor Field. ]]> |
