FARGO — North Dakota State couldn't make it to the end of the spring transfer portal period without taking a hit. Junior wide receiver Eli Green entered the portal on Monday, according to On3Sports.com.
Green emerged last season as a go-to player for the Bison, especially late in the regular season and the FCS playoffs. He finished second on the team in receptions with 45, one behind graduated senior Zach Mathis. Sources told The Forum Green was getting offers from other programs this semester.
Green was a spokesman of sorts for the The Green and The Gold Collective in the past few months, making public appearances on behalf of the group, which is in its first year as an organization.
His departure leaves senior RaJa Nelson as the top returning receiver, with Nelson also getting carries in the backfield. Nelson had 31 receptions while returning senior Braylon Henderson had 16. On the flipside, the Bison made a scholarship offer to former Minnesota Mr. Football Cade Osterman from Elk River, a receiver who redshirted last season at the University of Minnesota.
The spring portal period closes on Wednesday.
Green, from Farmington, Minnesota, redshirted in 2021. He had six receptions the following season with two touchdowns, one coming in the Division I FCS national title game. He was expected to be one of the top returning receivers next in the FCS, but is now likely FBS bound.
Green is the third NDSU player to leave the team this portal period, but the first who played. Backup defensive end Matt Weerts and cornerback Chase Nixon were the other two.
