Description: FARGO The North Dakota State baseball team fell further off the pace in the Summit League standings with two losses to Omaha in a league doubleheader on Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field.

The Bison's last-ditch rally in the ninth inning fell short in a 7-6 loss in the first game. The Mavericks then rode a pair of two-run home runs to a 6-3 win in the second game.

The Bison began the day in second place behind St. Thomas and narrowly ahead of third-place Omaha. The Tommies split with Northern Colorado on Saturday but maintained the league lead at 11-6. Omaha moved into second at 12-8 and the Bison are third at 9-8. South Dakota State lost twice to Oral Roberts on Saturday and is fourth at 9-10.

The Bison and Mavericks wrap up their three-game weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Newman Outdoor Field.

In Saturday's second game, Omaha's Jackson Trout hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Drew Lechnir hit a two-run shot in the third inning for a 4-2 lead.

The Bison scored in the fourth to pull within one but Mavericks pitchers Caleb Riedel, Cooper Prososki and Tyler Mattingly held NDSU scoreless over the final five innings. Omaha added to its lead with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

NDSU's Jack Steil doubled in a run and Will Busch singled in a run in the second inning. Davis Hamilton doubled in a run in the fourth inning.

In the first game, thanks to a pair of three-run innings, Omaha built a 7-4 lead through four innings.

But NDSU pitchers Leland Wilson and Alex Karns held the Mavericks scoreless the final five innings. Karns pitched four shutout innings.

The Bison rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases on two walks and a single. Omaha reliever Luke Gainer entered and hit James Dunlap with a pitch to force in a run and make it 7-5.

Gainer got two strikeouts, then walked Garret Hill to force in another run and cut the lead to 7-6. But with the bases loaded, Gainer got a pop out to end the game.

Steil had two doubles in four trips and drove in two runs. Dunlap, Hill and Busch all had hits and RBI and Cadyn Schwabe was 2 for 5.
