FARGO Brennan Watkins was looking for a fresh start. North Dakota State was looking for players.
The two came together Tuesday as Watkins announced he will be transferring to NDSU next season and joining the Bison men’s basketball team.
“ I’d say the relationship that was built played a huge part. I felt that the staff really wanted me and that I was a priority for them.” Watkins said.

He says he was contacted on April 1 and the relationship grew with assistant coach Luke Strege.
Watkins is a 5-foot-11 point guard, who will come to Fargo after spending the last three years at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia.
Watkins is coming off his best collegiate season for the Keydets, averaging 15 points per game for VMI, who finished last in the SoCon this season, going 4-28 overall and just 1-17 in league contests.
His best game of the season came against a Summit League opponent. Watkins scored 29 points against South Dakota on November 17 in an 85-81 Coyote win.
Watkins missed the final eight games of this season with an ankle injury, he missed the entire 2022-23 season with an injury.
Watkins hails from Kearney, Nebraska where he scored over 1,000 points during his high school career.

He announced he was entering the transfer portal on March 13 and had several schools in pursuit.
Reportedly, Weber State and Oral Roberts among over a dozen schools shown interest in Watkins before he chose NDSU.
“ I also really liked their honesty with me about the vision about myself in the program. The winning culture and brotherhood at NDSU is unmatched and I wanted to be a part of that.”
Watkins is the first D-I transfer to the NDSU roster since Jordan Horn transferred to the Bison from Siena College in 2018.
It’s the first addition to the roster after five departures through the transfer portal. Boden Skunberg landed at Illinois State, Andrew Morgan at Nebraska, with Josh Streit and Lance Waddles heading to Omaha and Sam Hastreiter going to Minnesota State Moorhead.
NDSU’s 2024-25 roster is up to nine players, not counting the incoming freshmen. That number took a hit on Tuesday when signed recruit Isaia Howard announced he was decommitting from NDSU and asking for his release from his national letter of intent.
Utah high school player Carson Smith announced earlier this month that he had committed to play for the Bison.
Damari Wheeler-Thomas, Tajavis Miller, Jeremiah Burke, Noah Feddersen, Jacari White, Darik Dissette and Eli Bradley are the returners of a team that lost in the first round of the Summit League Tournament to St. Thomas.
Watkins will have two years of eligibility remaining once he arrives in Fargo.
