FARGO - After its best season at the Division I level, North Dakota State has lost its best player.
Sophomore guard Elle Evans has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, sources confirmed to WDAY's Dom Izzo.
Evans just completed a second standout season with the Bison, avearging 15.5 points per game, to go along with five rebounds per game. She was named to the Summit League first team. Evans reached double figures in points in all but five games this season, with a career high of 33 coming against the University of North Dakota on February 3.
The 6-foot-3 Evans burst on the scene for the Bison last season, as she was named the Summit League Freshman of the Year along with a spot on the all-defensive team, which she earned a spot again on this season.
She was considered a game-changing player for NDSU, paired with outgoing senior Heaven Hamling, led the Bison to the most wins (22) that the team had since moving up to Division I. NDSU reached its first Summit League tournament championship game and won a postgame game for the first time since 2000, with a second round victory over Montana in the women's NIT.
Evans became a tremendous 3-point shooter this season, ranking sixth in all of Division I, making 75 of 164 shots, for a 48% rate.
Evans was lightly recruited out of Edwardsville, Illinois and chose NDSU over a handful of mid-major offers in the fall of 2021.
She gave an emotional postgame interview after NDSU's season ended last Friday in Minnesota; speaking of a hopeful future with the Bison.
“I’m so proud of everyone on this team and I’m so proud to be a part of NDSU women’s basketball,” Evans said. “I’m so excited for the future because we have such a young group. Just to come back with this young group we have is obviously huge.”
Evans was one of the few women's athletes to have an NIL deal at NDSU. She signed with OK Tire back in January.
Evans scored 928 points in her two seasons with the Bison and leaves a gaping hole on the roster. With Hamling gone and Evans departure, NDSU has an unenviable task to try and and replace its two best players.
