FARGO The weather may have been chilly but the North Dakota State softball team's bats were not as the Bison scored 25 runs in two Summit League victories over St. Thomas on Saturday at Tharaldson Park.
The Bison opened the day with a 13-4, five-inning win over the Tommies before prevailing 12-9 in a game two slugfest.
The Bison, who rode Addie Bowers' five-hitter to a 4-0 win Friday, took the weekend series and stacked up some wins after a three-week stretch bereft of them.
In the first game, the Bison got rolling quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Tommies pulled within a run with three runs in the second but the Bison tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning. NDSU stretched the lead to six runs with three in the third and effectively ended the game with four runs in the fourth, three coming on Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage's three-run home run.
The top of the order carried the Bison offense, with the top four hitters going 12 for 13 with four extra base hits, eight RBIs and 11 runs.
Leadoff hitting Aguilar-Beaucage finished 4 for 4 with the three-run shot and a double. No. 2 Emilee Buringa was 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI. She and Aguilar-Beaucage both scored four runs.
Three-hole hitter Bella Dean was 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs and cleanup Reanna Rudd was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Reliever Kaitlyn Dunford went 3-2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits, to get the win and improve to 5-3. In the second game, the Bison again broke out strong, taking a 12-1 lead through two innings. But the Tommies weren't dead, scoring seven runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to cut NDSU's lead to three runs.
But Bison reliever Savy Williams shut down the Tommies over the final three-plus innings. She went 3-2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit. She didn't issue a walk and struck out two. Ella Claus was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run in the first and she singled in two runs in the second. Dean was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs and Rudd also was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Rylee Henderson had two hits and an RBI.
The Bison's three wins over the weekend are one more than they managed the previous three weeks. Before the weekend, NDSU was 2-12 since March 8.
The Bison are 3-3 in the Summit League and 15-23 overall. They take a break from their Summit schedule to play three games at UNLV on April 6-7. They then host South Dakota State for three league games April 13-14. ]]> |
