Description: FARGO Carter Zeller has made lifetime memories on the north side of Fargo over the last couple of years. He’s hoping to make a few more after deciding where was going to college.

The Fargo North two-sport standout announced Wednesday that he has committed to play college football at North Dakota State.

“I grew up watching them. They’re a great and historic program and it was always a dream to play for them.” Zeller said.

Zeller, who is 6-foot-6 and weighs in at 230 pounds, was an all-state selection in both football and basketball for the Spartans, helping North to back-to-back state championships on the gridiron and the 2023 Class A (now Division AA) basketball title.

He was named an all-state first team basketball selection this past season, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds a game for a team that reached the state semifinals. Zeller says he was torn between playing basketball or football in college until this past fall.

“I would say during the season I thought about it a lot," Zeller said. "But playing this last football season, I had so much fun and just didn’t want to stop playing, that’s why I chose football.”

Zeller finished second on the Spartans in receiving this past season, with 14 receptions for 289 yards and four touchdowns. That included a 53-yard touchdown grab in the Dakota Bowl, scoring the first touchdown in North’s 31-6 win over Grand Forks Central.

He will be a preferred walk-on with the Bison, who are envisioning him playing tight end at the next level.

“I had heard from NDSU during my junior year, and we started talking a lot more the last couple of months. They really like the way I like to compete," Zeller said.

"You won’t meet a more high-character kid than Carter Zeller. Somebody that will bring it and tremendous work ethic, just one of the best kids.” said North boys basketball head coach Travis Hoeg.

Zeller had six offers from other college football programs, including Minnesota State Moorhead, Sioux Falls, Northern State and Bemidji State. He said he wanted to play things out with football and basketball before he made a final decision on college football.

“It took a lot of time where I would fit in some place, and I decided to take the football route and NDSU is what I always felt," Zeller said.

Zeller will team back up with his longtime teammate Peder Haugo. Haugo, the 2023 Gatorade North Dakota player of the year, signed with NDSU back in December.

“It’s going to be great, we aregreat friends on and off the field. Peder was very excited for me, he wanted to see me succeed," Zeller said.
