FARGO Jacob Kilzer has had an interest in North Dakota State since his childhood. Kilzer, a 6-foot-3, 205 pound quarterback from Maple Grove High School in the Twin Cities officially signed with NDSU on Wednesday, Feb. 7th, the first day of the late signing period. "I talked with NDSU a lot during my recruiting process through high school and was always very interested due to their culture and history of winning." Kilzer said. Kilzer enrolled at the Air Force Academy during the 2023 football season and then decided to transfer. He has plenty of experience winning, leading Maple Grove to the 2022 6A state championship, the first in school history for the Crimson. Kilzer threw for 1,352 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding another 20 scores on the ground in Maple Grove's 13-0 season. Kilzer also has plenty connections to NDSU. Both his parents went to school there and the Bison recruited him when he was coming out of Maple Grove. "Through my recruitment process in high school I made a lot of great connections with the coaches here and I also was a big fan of Coach (Tim) Polasek from when I was being recruited by Wyoming." Kilzer persevered thru the toughest of circumstances during his senior season at Maple Grove. He tore the labrums in both of his shoulders and didn't miss a start that season. He was named the 2023 All-Metro Sports Award Courage in Competition winner by the Star Tribune. https://twitter.com/KilzerJacob/status/1619040206090539008 The ironic part is that Kilzer tore the labrum in his right shoulder at a junior camp at NDSU during a tackling drill. His running ability is what attracted to the Air Force Academy to recruit Kilzer. He had surgery in June of 2023 and is back to full strength in each of his shoulders. Kilzer was a first-team all-Metro selection after Maple Grove's 27-10 win over Rosemount for the 6A title game at U.S. Bank Stadium. He threw for 130 yards and a touchdown, while adding two rushing scores in the win. https://twitter.com/KilzerJacob/status/1594129385778728960 NDSU originally offered Kilzer in November of 2022. The University of Minnesota followed two days after the Bison offered. Air Force, South Dakota and Kent State also offered Kilzer. "Getting the opportunity to come this spring semester as technically being an early enroll freshman with full eligibility and a redshirt year seemed like an awesome opportunity at a school I’ve always had great interest in." Kilzer is joined by Marshall offensive line transfer Trent Fraley as the two FBS transfers that have enrolled at NDSU. Each will be eligible to participate in spring football when it begins in March. NDSU also announced that high school players have signed; Gage Schmidt from Mankato, Minnesota and Jack Hansen from Eagan. Each are preferred walk-ons and brings the total amount of signees up to 24 for the Bison Class of 2024. Head coach Tim Polasek said there's a potential for NDSU to add an additional player in the coming weeks. ]]> |
