FARGO The final week of the FCS regular season has arrived and North Dakota State has plenty to play for when they travel to the UNI-Dome and Northern Iowa. The Bison (7-3, 4-3) take on a Northern Iowa team (6-4, 5-2) that's reeling, coming off a 35-16 blasting on the road at Missouri State. The Panthers have had an up and down season, losing their first two games to Iowa State and Weber State. Northern Iowa rattled off three straight wins after that, beating Idaho State, Youngstown State and Indiana State. After a loss to South Dakota State, the Panthers then followed up with wins over North Dakota, Illinois State and Western Illinois. But the loss last year was stunning, as the Bears entered with just three wins and built a 35-9 win on UNI. NDSU has everything to play for as the Bison can potentially enter the top eight seed conversation if they win. The Bison are likely already in the playoffs, but a win would give them eight victories and would garner some conversation from the FCS Playoff Committee about a bye and top-eight seed. Northern Iowa hasn't beaten NDSU since November of 2014, a 23-3 win that ended what was then a record 33-game win streak. Since then, the Bison have had some close wins (2015, 2016 and spring 2021) and blowouts (2017, 2018, 2019). NDSU hasn't seen the Panthers since October of 2021 as they rotated off the schedule last year. NDSU's last trip to Cedar Falls came in April 2021, a 23-20 win, that signaled the final full game that Zeb Noland played at quarterback. Solon, Iowa native Cam Miller threw one pass and ran the ball twice in the game, as he'll get his first action against the Panthers. He didn't play in the game in October 2021 when the Panthers traveled to Fargo. They'll face 6-foot-5 quarterback Theo Day, in his third year as the starter. Day has 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the season, which is an intriguing stat that the Bison defense may be able to take the ball away. The Forum's Jeff Kolpack and WDAY's Dom Izzo preview the matchup and what the win could mean for NDSU and Northern Iowa with the Selection Show coming Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. on ESPNU. ]]> |
