Description: FARGO Former North Dakota State golfer Maddie Herzog wasn't actively looking to leap into coaching after her Bison career concluded in the spring.

“It wasn’t even on my radar," said Herzog, from Detroit Lakes, Minn.

However, while working a junior camp about a month ago at Suite Shots in Fargo, a former Cobbers golf coach mentioned the job opening.

Now the 23-year-old Herzog is set to start her coaching career.

Herzog has been named Concordia head women's golf coach, athletic director Rachel Bergeson announced Thursday, July 13.

“I’m really excited to get to know the team," Herzog said. "I feel like I have a lot that I can offer them. I’ve experienced a lot with golf, good and bad. I’ve had a lot of success and I’ve had a lot of challenges. ... Golf is challenging and being someone who has been through it all and understands that, I can put myself in their shoes and offer some guidance.”

Herzog played five seasons for the Bison from 2018-2023. She becomes the seventh head coach in Cobbers women's golf program history.

"I have a lot of experience with golf. I’ve been around the game since as long as I can remember,” Herzog said.

Herzog played for three state championship teams at Detroit Lakes High School and was a finalist for 2018 Ms. Minnesota Golf an award given to the top senior golfer in the state during her final season with the Lakers.

“She both had a successful career at Detroit Lakes and then for NDSU so we’ve certainly followed Maddie’s career and we’ve known about Maddie as a golfer," Bergeson said.

Herzog has multiple family ties to Concordia as her brothers Josh and Michael Herzog both played for the Cobbers football team. Her sister Christine (Herzog) Hvidston is a former Concordia assistant golf coach.

“She had a deep understanding about what this place is all about," Bergeson said of Herzog's family ties to Concordia. "Some of the goals that she wants to achieve in our women’s golf program really aligned with what we want to achieve.”

Herzog said NDSU head women's golf coach Matt Johnson also encouraged her once he found out she was pondering pursuing the Concordia job opening.

“I was encouraged by a lot of people," Herzog said.

Herzog was a three-time Summit League Academic Honor Roll award winner during her Bison career. She was a Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar in 2021-2022.

“I’m excited to get it going in the fall," Herzog said.

“I really love her demeanor," Bergeson added. "She has a calm presence about her.”

Herzog said there was a time during her prep career when she thought Concordia would be her college choice, but the chance to play Division I golf at NDSU was an opportunity she couldn't turn down.

“I thought I was going to go to Concordia and I was pretty much set on it and all of a sudden my golf game developed," Herzog said.
