North Dakota State has found its quarterback recruit for the Class of 2023. And they found it in one of the most unlikely places the Bison have ever recruited. Jamestown (NY)'s Trey Drake announced his commitment to NDSU on Twitter Sunday afternoon. "Ultimately for me it was the coaching staff, they blew me out of the water. The tradition of pride and excellence is insane. I've been following NDSU football for a while, I knew it was a place I wanted to be." Drake said. https://twitter.com/TreyDrake17/status/1546164262695059456 Drake is 6-3, 200 pounds, he threw for 1,450 yards and 15 touchdowns to just two interceptions for Jamestown High School this past season. The Red Raiders posted a 12-1 record in 2021, reaching the Class A semifinals. There are five classes of football in New York state. Drake said he had an offer from Division 2 Mercyhurst College and a basketball scholarship offer. He had interest from FCS schools Delaware, Holy Cross, Penn and Dartmouth. https://twitter.com/TreyDrake17/status/1538623972471934982 "Coach (Randy) Hedberg got a tape of me, and saw something in me. I was sitting at home and got an email from Hedberg asking for me to call him. I called that night and was invited to NDSU's camp." Drake had an ordeal to get to Fargo from western New York, which included some flight issues in Chicago. He arrived in Fargo and was only able to participate in one day of NDSU's three day camp. "I got off the flight and a half hour later I was throwing in drills. I think Coach Hedberg and Coach (Tyler) Roehl were really impressed. We could have gone back that night, figured to stick it out." Drake has started the last three years for Jamestown, which is about 90 minutes south of Buffalo, New York. Drake is the first commit from the state of New York for NDSU in the Division I era. The Bison have four quarterbacks on the roster for the 2022 season. Cam Miller is a junior, with Cole Payton and Peter Anderson as redshirt freshmen. Nathan Hayes arrived on campus in June as a true freshman. "It really is every emotion combined. I'm so excited, I've been working my tail off for this moment. It's just awesome to see hard work pay off." Drake will appear on Hot Mic with Dom Izzo Monday morning on WDAY Xtra and Inforum.com.]]> |
