Description: FARGO Tywan Royal hasn’t visited the North Dakota State campus, but watched one of the Bison football games recently and knew that was the program for him.

The Norcross (Ga.) High School rising senior verbally committed to NDSU he announced over the weekend. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Royal is projected to play cornerback.

“NDSU is a winning environment. I like to win,” Royal said. “I watched one of the games last week and the atmosphere was crazy.”

The Bison have won nine NCAA Division I FCS national championships in the past 11 seasons. Royal played for Lanier (Ga.) High School last fall and is the seventh known commitment for the 2023 recruiting class. He’s the third defensive back prospect in the class thus far.

Royal had multiple FCS offers, including Samford and Grambling State.

“It was a relief to get it done,” Royal said. “It felt good to finally commit, the time was right.”

Royal expects to attend NDSU’s first home game next fall. He’s played multiple positions during his high school career, including wide receiver.

Royal likes the challenge of playing cornerback.

“I love press-man (coverage), me and the other guy competing,” Royal said. “I feel like I have the ability to go against the best players and take them out of the game and make it easier for my teammates.”

Royal grew up in Fort Wayne, Ind., and moved to Georgia in seventh grade. Football has been his favorite sport and his goal was to play for a Division I program.

“Football always gravitated towards me,” Royal said. “I watched it when I was so little. I fell in love with the game.”

Royal said NDSU’s ability to develop players into NFL prospects also played in his decision to commit to the Bison.

“My friends, they are really excited for me,” Royal said. “They knew I really wanted to play big-time football.”

The Bison have had recent recruiting success in the Atlanta area. Senior running back Kobe Johnson, junior safety Dom Jones and junior wide receiver DJ Hart all played their high school football near Atlanta.
