FARGO Shooting guard Jacari White has committed to play men's basketball for North Dakota State, he announced Thursday, June 9, via Twitter. The 6-foot-4 White played for State College of Florida, a junior college program in Bradenton, Fla., last season. He averaged 13.5 points per game and shot 39% (71 of 183) from 3-point range in 30 games. White also shot 93% from the foul line. “He’s a great shooter and an elite defender and I think those two traits can get you on the floor about anywhere, but I think the biggest separator of Jacari is his love for the game," said SCF head coach Tom Parks. "He’s really, really talented, but he loves it.” White is from Orlando, Fla., and played at Olympia High School where he averaged 13 points per game during his senior season. https://twitter.com/jacariwhite_/status/1534928858377502725?s=20&t=EPMkHt2YU4BFY93mFb60HQ White was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection as a freshman for the Manatees. He shot 44% from the floor, while adding 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. “I’ve coached a lot of players that have played at the (NCAA) Division I level in my nine years as a junior college coach, and I would say Jacari is among the top of them," said Parks, who recently completed his fourth season as head coach at SCF. "He has a lot of characteristics and traits that players that have gone on to really good schools and conferences have been very, very successful.” The Bison continue to remake their roster this offseason after losing of key players, including guards Sam Griesel, Tyree Eady and Jarius Cook and forward Maleeck Harden-Hayes. All four entered the transfer portal and landed with other schools. In May, the Bison also added point guard Luke Yoder of Illinois Wesleyan, an NCAA Division III program in Bloomington, Ill. The 6-foot, 170-pound Yoder averaged 11.6 points and 2.9 assists per game last season, shooting 39% (35 of 89) from 3-point range. Parks said White is a combination guard who has the ability to play point guard. “He’s a combo because he can handle it really well, but he has a lot of the traditional shooting guard skills, like old-school shooting guards who can come off a lot of different types of screening action," Parks said. Parks said State College of Florida played all NJCAA Division I opponents this past season, so White played against a high level of competition. Bison head coach David Richman, who can't comment on White until he signs, runs a system that stresses defense. Parks said White is a strong defender. “He understands team defense, but he’s a great on-ball defender," Parks said. "He has the ability to really pressure guys, but still keep them in front. He understands angles and knows how to cut guys off. He is extremely good at playing defense with his hands without fouling and great instincts. ... He’s one of the best defenders I’ve ever coached.” The Bison also added five high school signees for next season: guard Lance Waddles, from Shreveport, La.; forward Noah Feddersen, from Menomonie, Wis., forward Sam Hastreiter, from Lincoln, Neb.; guard Tajavis Miller, from Lubbock, Texas; and Damari Wheeler-Thomas from Elgin, Ill. The Bison posted a 23-10 record last season, advancing to the Summit League tournament championship game where they lost to South Dakota State.
