Description: FARGO San Francisco veteran offensive lineman Trent Williams likes the makeup of second-year quarterback Trey Lance, who the 49ers selected No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

San Francisco had its first day of mandatory minicamp Tuesday in Santa Clara, Calif.

“He carries himself extremely well, which is why he’s here, why everybody is so high on him,” Williams said of the former North Dakota State QB. “We all know his attributes as a quarterback, but I think his mental (approach), the way he carries himself, the way he holds his head, nothing ever rattles him. That’s his key feature and I think that will take him a long way.”

The 6-foot-4, 224-pound Lance played in six games during his rookie season, making two starts, while backing up starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

“I was in a little bit of a weird spot last year,” Lance said. “I wasn’t necessarily playing. … I tried to embrace my role and make the most out of it.”

Lance completed 41 of 71 passes (58%) for 603 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions.

“I think Trey has been deliberate in everything he’s done,” San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Especially last week into today, you can really see him stacking days and getting better each practice.”

Earlier this offseason, Shanahan said the team is ready for Lance to become the starter. The 30-year-old Garoppolo was excused from mandatory minicamp according to multiple media reports to rehab a shoulder injury that required surgery.

The 49ers are looking into the possibility of trading the veteran QB this offseason to clear the way for Lance to become the starter. The 33-year-old Williams said he likes the way Lance has handled himself in a high-profile situation.

“To see him continue to march forward and continue to get better and block out all the noise is to me I think is phenomenal,” said Williams, a multiple-time Pro Bowler. “He has the qualities to lead and he has the qualities where people want to follow him.”

Lance said he spent most of the offseason in Southern California to train and develop his skills heading into the upcoming season. Williams said he can tell that Lance has had a productive offseason.

“I do see the growth,” Williams said. “He’s a lot more comfortable. You can tell he worked on his mechanics.”

San Francisco star receiver Deebo Samuel reported for the first day of mandatory minicamp after he requested a trade in the offseason. Even though Samuel didn’t participate, Lance was happy to see Samuel with the team.

“Deebo is a guy we love to have in the locker room,” Lance said. “It’s good to have him, Trent, (Nick) Bosa, those guys back. I talk to Deebo a ton, even when he’s not here. Obviously, good to have him back, just his vibe on the field, his energy.”
