FARGO - North Dakota State track has grown accustomed to sending athletes to the NCAA Championships and coming home with hardware. Starting with Laura Hermanson in 2009 to Akealy Moton last year, the Bison have racked up All-American honors. This year though, they will make history with perhaps the most unlikely entrant to the championships. Two weeks ago at the NCAA West Regional in Arkansas, the 4 by 400 team of Adrian Harris, Jacob Levin, Jacob Rodin and Cody Roder broke the school record in the event for the second time in three weeks and shocked everyone, including themselves. https://twitter.com/NDSUTrackField/status/1530372923114115072 "I was in shock. I looked at the clock and I saw the little Q (qualifed) next to our time, 3:05 and I was speechless at first, then I was overwhelmed with emotion." said senior Adrian Harris, who runs the first leg. "To get top 3 in that race, and to see Cody (Roder) in third place by a wide margin, I just threw my hands up in the air, it was an awesome feeling." said Kenmare native Jacob Rodin, who runs the third leg. Now the Bison will get to run in one of the premier events in track at the home of the sport. Tracktown, USA in Eugene, Oregon. WATCH: NDSU 4x400 men's relay set to compete in the NCAA Track Championships "It's the Holy Grail of track meets. For a while we just wanted to break the school record, now what we can do? I don't think we imagined us being in Oregon." said the Bemidji native Roder, who runs the anchor leg. They are joined by West Fargo's Jacob Levin, who runs the second leg. Levin is a great story unto himself, who never finished higher than fifth at a a state meet in high school. "We have no pressure at all, I believe we can advance, we can easily make it to finals." Harris said. Rodin, who hails from tiny Kenmare, population 987, he's still coming to grips on what they have done. "As a small town kid, you really only dream about stuff like this, go out and work hard, it's been a blessing to me." The team believes no matter what happens Wednesday, this is a breakthrough. "A lot of kids will now see you can come to a mid-major school like NDSU and do just as well as a Power 5 and SEC schools, it's a huge deal going forward for NDSU track." NDSU will compete in the first heat race of the 4x400 race Wednesday night at 9:45 central time. They will be in the same heat race with teams from LSU, Alabama, Texas and Iowa. The top nine times will advance to the final on Friday. ]]> |
