FARGO Former North Dakota State wide receiver Christian Watson ranks among the top athletes at his position since 1987, according to his relative athletic score (RAS), a metric that was created by a lifelong Detroit Lions fan. Kent Lee Platte, who describes himself as having a “passion for math and metrics in general” developed RAS, which can be used as a tool to compare NFL Draft prospects past and present, using measurables like height, weight, vertical, 40-yard time and 3-cone drill. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Watson scored a 9.96 RAS, which is tied for No. 11 overall at wide receiver since 1987. Watson’s RAS compares to the likes of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson (10.00 in 2007), Julio Jones (9.97 in 2011), Javon Walker (9.98 in 2002), D.J. Chark (9.93 in 2018) and Tyrell Williams (9.92 in 2015). Watson has the top RAS score among 2022 NFL Draft prospects, according to ras.football, among players who have posted enough measurables to receive a score. Notre Dame's Kevin Austin is second at 9.94, Lenoir-Rhyne's Dareke Young is third at 9.93, Cincinnati's Alec Pierce is fourth at 9.82, Texas' Brenden Schooler is fifth at 9.78 and Northern Iowa's Isaiah Weston is sixth at 9.62. The NFL Draft start Thursday, April 28, in Las Vegas with the first round and continues with the second and third rounds Friday and Rounds 4-7 on Saturday. Some experts have projected Watson to be a first-round selection. At NDSU's annual spring game, Watson said the majority of the calls his agent received from NFL teams is leaning toward selection in the early second round, The Forum's Mike McFeely reported. https://twitter.com/McFeely_Inforum/status/1517955946487689218?s=20&t=eop11BjGIzFnwEHirW1OWQ Watson initially scored a 10 on RAS after the NFL Scouting Combine, but that was adjusted to 9.96 after his shuttle and 3-cone times were added at NDSU's annual pro day. https://twitter.com/MathBomb/status/1506609207000416265?s=20&t=eop11BjGIzFnwEHirW1OWQ Watson also has the top RAS of any NDSU prospect since 1987. Former Bison quarterback Carson Wentz scored a 9.69 RAS from his measurables in 2016. Former NDSU QB Easton Stick scored a 9.48 from his measurables in 2019. Those are the top three Bison prospects in RAS, which can be found at ras.football. Offensive tackles Dillon Radunz (9.25 in 2021) and Joe Haeg (9.24 in 2016) also scored in the 9s. Long snapper James Fisher (8.75 in 2018), defensive end Derrek Tuszka (8.53 in 2020) and tight end Josh Babicz (8.14 in 2022) are Bison prospects who scored in the 8s in RAS in their respective position groups. Former Bison quarterback Trey Lance didn’t post enough measurables in the pre-draft process to post an RAS score. The 6-foot-4, 228-pound Lance was the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Babicz has RAS comps to former Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph (7.51 in 2011), Luke Farrell (8.66 in 2021). Cole Hunt (7.58 in 2018), Anthony Auclair (8.28 in 2017) and Kyle Brady (8.54 in 1995). The RAS has a composite size grade (height, weight, bench press), composite explosion grade (vertical and broad jump), composite speed grade (40-yard dash, 20 split, 10 split) and composite agility grade (shuttle and 3-cone). ]]> |
