FARGO “Eighteen-year-old Cordell would have no idea what's in front of him. That's for sure,” said former North Dakota State offensive lineman Cordell Volson Volson is from Balfour, North Dakota. A town of 27 people. “I played nine man football," said Volson. "You know, I was actually probably more of a basketball player in high school. I guess it all paid off, right?” WDAY Sports 10 PM; April 25 Six years later, offensive lineman had appeared in an NDSU record 65 games. During his time as a Bison, Volson was a three-time FCS All American and was part of four national championships. “You know it’s always about leaving somewhere better than you found it and I hope I did that at NDSU," said the offensive lineman. The day after his final national championship, Volson's path to the NFL Draft began as he started training with former 49er Alex Boone in Minneapolis. "He’s been a great resource for me. Getting to see him every day and do workouts with him, he’s the same type of guy I am which is awesome because he plays with a chip on his shoulder," Volson said. Boone isn’t the only help Volson's had along the way. His older brother, Tanner, earned an NFL contract. He also played along side Titan lineman, Dillon Radunz, and blocked for two NFL quarterbacks, Trey Lance and Easton Stick "I actually had a two hour phone call with Easton Stick just to talk about what to expect," Volson said. "The same goes with Dillon Radunz, we were roommates throughout college, great friends so it was nice just to pick his brain." Their advice was vital. The 6’7, 313 pound lineman immediately sturned heads at the NFL Combine and East West Shrine Bowl. "I was like, okay, I belong here. I belong to play in the NFL," said Volson. "I’ve met with every team. Then there’s some teams that I've met with two times, some teams I've met with three times and there's even a couple of teams I met with four times," Volson continued. "I’m definitely looking forward to whoever takes me and I’m not going to let them down for sure." Volson is drawing buzz from several teams, but he's already thought about a dream scenario. "If I could chose anyone, honestly there's a couple that come to mind, but I think it would be cool to go to Tennessee,"said Volson. "An added piece to that is that I get to reunite with Dylan and play with him again." Being a North Dakota native, Volson also mentions he wouldn't mind playing for his hometown team, the Minnesota Vikings. At the end of the day, Volson just wants one team to give him a shot, no matter what coast it's on. For some, it might be easy to get caught up in the moment, but one piece of advice has stuck with Volson throughout the entire process: Stick to your roots. "I’m going to go home and be with my family, we’re just going to keep it small. I know some of the guys on the team like Cody Mauch and Jake Kubas, those guys are going to come," said Volson. "Celebrating that moment with people who are important to me I’m really looking forward to." ]]> |
