His curio shop was not what he is famous for, however – it was his torture and murder of six young men between 1984 and 1987 that earned him his fearsome nickname. When one of his captives, who had suffered horrific abuse at Berdella’s hands, managed to escape and alert police, authorities unearthed unspeakable horror in the home of the Butcher, including photographs of his sexual assault of young men, evidence of grotesque methods of physical torture , and a skull buried in the backyard.
