For Beyond 50's "Legal" talks, listen to an interview with Roberta Kaplan. She is renowned litigator Robbie Kaplan. She'll talk about her story of working on a case that ultimately brought down DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) before the United States Supreme Court in one of this country's most significant civil rights victories. Together with her legal team and client, Kaplan formulated a strategy to bring down the law. Having lost the case for marriage equality before New York State's highest court in 2006, Kaplan was determined not to lose again. She coined the maxim "It's all about Edie, stupid" to constantly remind herself and her team what the case was really about, and that refrain aptly describes the book itself. In 1996, when DOMA was passed, more than 68 percent of Americans opposed the idea of gay people marrying. In 2010, when Windsor's case was filed, only four states (not including Kaplan and Windsor¢??s home state of New York) recognized marriages between gay couples. This year's ruling by the Supreme Court that gay marriage is legal in all 50 states firmly places the ruling with other landmark cases like Brown v. Board of Education or Loving v. Virginia.
