On this episode of Baseball Outside the Box, Pete Caliendo is joined by former 17-year Major Leaguer and seven-time All-Star, Reggie Smith.
Reggie spent his 17 years in Major League Baseball as a member of the Boston Red Sox ( Hall of Fame), St. Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Dodgers before ending his career with a one-year stint as a member of the San Francisco Giants. Smith ended his career with a .287 average, hit 314 home runs, and drove in 1,092 runs in addition to his seven All-Star games and four appearances in the World Series (World Series Champion – Los Angeles Dodgers, 1981). After a career playing with the likes of Carl Yastrzemski, Steve Garvey, and Lou Brock, Reggie went on to become the Dodgers field coordinator before becoming their hitting coach the following season. In addition, Smith helped coach Team USA to an Olympic gold medal in 2000, a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, and was the hitting coach for the USA team at the World Baseball Classic in 2006.
Reggie and Pete discuss coaching and player development, as well as the tremendous amount of charity work Smith has done for his community. In 1998, he opened the Reggie Smith Baseball Centers (Encino, California) and they continue to be a driving force for young baseball players, today.
