Ken Medlock talks baseball, “Moneyball”, and more on this episode of Baseball Outside the Box!
 Ken Medlock with Brad Pitt
On this episode of Baseball Outside the Box, Coach Caliendo talks to Ken Medlock, his friend and coaching partner on 1999 USA Baseball Professional Team, about his role as an actor in “Moneyball” and his managing/coaching in the professional independent Northern League. Ken played Grady Fusion, a professional scout who had a different philosophy than Oakland Athletics General Manager, Billy Bean, played by Brad Pitt.
Ken and Pete begin their discussion by looking back at “Moneyball” and the role it played in shaping the game today when it comes to scouting and statistics. Their discussion started with someone they both know, Charlie Sheen, and his baseball skills, before segueing into their time together training in Tuscon (Arizona) with Team USA. The guys tell us about pitching mechanics, coaching philosophies, and understanding why more and more of today’s younger players are getting injured.
Plus, the two further their conversation about continued training methods (along with some great coaching advice about letting kids play the game) giving players certain responsibilities, allowing players to make critical decisions, encouraging them to learn from their mistake, and the idea that coaches should teach during practice while kids play during the game.
Do not miss this explosive interview featuring a coach who played the game at a high level, managed and coached in the Independent League, and one who Coach Caliendo says might be one of the smartest teachers in the game, today.
Please welcome Ken Medlock to this episode of Baseball Outside the Box!
